RE: Call for Submissions MFVA-MPBN’s Maine Community Film Collaboration Broadcast Series
Dear MFVA Members:
The Maine Film & Video Association is pleased to announce that it has entered into an agreement with Maine Public Broadcasting Network to provide content for an upcoming Maine-centric television series called the “MPBN Community Film Collaboration”. The details of the agreement, along with the Guidelines, Air Agreement, and Program Proposal Form are found in later forum threads. Summary below.
The agreement with MPBN will provide three ways in which producers can earn income from offering their program for broadcast:
1. Sponsorship—producers may approach prospective sponsors who have an interest in your MPBN broadcast. Such sponsors may contribute any amount to the producer for “production support” (averages in the past range from $125-$1000) and the producer may credit that contribution with a :15 second spot at the beginning and/or end of your program. You produce the tag in conformance with the MPBN-MFVA Partnership Agreement and Guidelines (attached), embed that spot on your master tape or file, and you keep 100% of what you raise. This will be a direct agreement between the producer and the sponsor. The language of those spots will need to be approved in advance by MPBN’s Susan Tran. 27:00 minute programs may have a total of four spots, (two at the start, two at the end) 57:00 minute programs may have a total of eight spots, (four at the start, four at the end) – four total per half hour.
2. DVD Sales—at the beginning and end of each broadcast of your program, MPBN will promote the sale of your DVDs and point interested viewers to their website http://www.mpbn.net There, viewers will find descriptions of your program and links to the producers’ or distributors’ websites where sales will be direct to the consumer. MPBN receives no fee for this service.
3. Programs Selected for MPBN Fundraising Campaigns—Any program used during an MPBN fundraising campaign will receive $100. from MPBN in recognition of its value in helping to raise needed funds. Programs selected will receive additional promotion.
Number of Broadcasts: You may limit the number of broadcasts or the time frame within which you’d like your program limited. However we encourage giving MPBN greater latitude to broaden the reach of your programs and increase your prospective Sponsorship and DVD sales income. See Air Agreement.
Broadcast length: programs that are 27:00; 57:00; or 87:00 are preferred but it will be possible for MPBN to combine shorter and varied lengths. You may be asked to edit to a preferred length. But please submit any length program.
Promotion: MPBN is committed to promoting this series in a number of ways—on their website, on MPBN radio as well as on television. The MFVA will promote this to its members and friends, post continuing program and schedule information on our website http://www.mainefilm.com, and will carry on a publicity campaign throughout the state.
Co-Promotion with Statewide Screening Series: In conjunction with the broadcast series, the MFVA will make selections from the MPBN series for inclusion in a screening series that will tour the state in some of the popular art film houses. This is being developed and will be rolled out shortly. We are encouraging the attendance of the film/video makers to make this an exciting series for the public, and to promote the professionalism of Maine filmmakers. Let us know if your submission is also available for screening in a theater. We are requesting that you submit two DVDs so we may consider your program for the screening series.
Rights: All rights to all images and sound need to be secured by the producers prior to broadcast and will remain in the hands of the producers. An Air Release must be signed and included with the submission giving MPBN rights to broadcast.
No deadlines: We accept submissions as they come in. Our Committee will make all decisions as to which programs will be proposed for inclusion. We need to retain a high level of production value so please submit your best. MPBN has the right to accept or reject any of our submissions.
Submission Format: DVD
More details: If you’re interested in submitting, please read the attached Guidelines carefully and refrain from calling MPBN or members of our MFVA-MPBN Broadcast Committee. This is a completely volunteer effort and we need to make the process as streamlined as possible. If after careful review you still have a question, please email and we will do our best to get back to you in as timely a way as possible. Include the following:
1. Two DVDs of your program;
2. Completed copy of your Air Agreement;
3. Completed copy of your Program Proposal.
