Kahbang Festival and MFVA Meeting

Please note that the program has been revised.  MEET THE FILM COMMISSIONERS will be taking place at a later date when the Commissioners have had the opportunity to meet and discuss their vision of the future so we can have a more substantial discussion.  We will keep you posted about when this will take place.

In its place we will be highlighting clips from the works of four Maine films at KahBANG with all four directors present to talk about making films in Maine.

All MFVA members get a 50% discount at the box office—$10 for all film events.  Or buy tickets on line at www.kahbang.com and use the discount code “MFVA” to get the discount (a $5 discount on line).

The four films highlighting the Saturday August 7th 5:30PM meeting are:

The story of Maine musician, record producer, and Bluegrass Pioneer, Al Hawkes. In 1956, Al founded the Event Records label with his wife Barbara and partner Richard Greeley. For over two decades he created some of the most highly regarded country, Bluegrass, and rockabilly recordings - including songs by Dick Curless, Lenny Breau (as a teenage guitar virtuoso), Curtis Johnson, Hal Lone Pine and Betty Cody, Don Stover, and the Lilly Brothers. Many of these artists were on the verge of national stardom, and many ultimately chose to not follow the path to Nashville but instead remained up north, creating a distinct regional sound on a distinctly independent label.

Canvas Man: The Robbie Ellis Story
Director: Gary Robinov
USA, 2009, 52 min., color
Categories: Maine on Main/Documentary
**proceeded by short film:

Screening Friday, August 13, 2010 1:30pm Bangor Opera House
Canvasman is a portrait of a man who is less concerned with doing what is expected of him than he is with living a life that is fueled by passion and the excitement of the wrestling ring. His journey is one that teaches us that if we follow our hearts, even if they take us in unlikely directions, we can live our lives uninhibited by age and stereotypes and find out who we really are.

What if pregnancy wasn’t like it is in the movies? This is the story of Steve and Julie, a young couple whose unexciting lives are interrupted by an unwanted pregnancy. Unprepared, uneducated, and uncouth, th young underachievers attempt to deal with the difficulties and decisions of an event that will change the course of their short lives. Their crass naivete concerning their situation and their questions about their future provide the basis of a very real comedy about a very real situation. A new take on a classic problem, ‘Up Up Down Down’ is at times superlatively immature and touching, riding the ebb and flow of a young couple dealing with the process of moving on in their lives, kicking and screaming all the way.
