Earlier this week on “Maine Watch”, members of the Maine film community spoke with the show’s host, Jennifer Rooks. In a terrific field piece, Rooks interviewed Louise Rosen, Lea Girardin, Laurie Notch, and Cameron Bonsey. Footage included shots from MFVA’s most recent meeting, a showcase of Maine’s 48-hr film festival held at the Maine Studios. A second field segment profiled Michael Maglaras, creator of, “John Marin: Let the Paint be Paint”. In the studio, Rooks spoke with two young filmmakers, Josephine Cooper (15) and Aleah Graham (13) of Project Aware who directed and starred in the film “Influenced”.
The hopeful, inspiring message of the program was underscored by MFVA’s Richard Kane, “I think the overriding message was… there is a strong and growing indigenous film community making films of all kinds and employing many of us to make quality projects happen.”
“Maine Watch”, part of MPBN’s weekly public affairs programming, demonstrated several exciting new endeavors shaping up on the Maine film and video scene: opportunities for young filmmakers; exciting topics drawing out-of-state producers here; international distribution companies relocated in Maine (Louise Rosen LTD) and advocates like Cameron Bonsey (Maine Film Blog) continually pushing to make Maine an ever more filmmaker friendly state. All of these projects are bolstered and supported by festivals, like the 48-hr film festival; exciting new organizations like the Maine Film Cooperative with its Maine Studio Initiative, and of course, the continuing efforts of the Maine Film & Video Association, supporting all these endeavors.
Dick Kane, while inspired by these new projects, knows that they cannot succeed without support, “More and better projects will come to Maine and will grow from within as well as from without. But it doesn’t just happen. People need to be motivated and inspired to get out there and make contacts with the outside world to get the funding for the brilliant projects that are percolating in our minds. And that happens when you start to connect with the rest of the industry and share your knowledge and collaborate with others, attend workshops and meetings and network. So ... go for it!”
