Screenwriting Course at SMCC

SCREENWRITING 101
There are no secrets to writing a great screenplay. Almost all professional writers use simple methods to flesh out their stories and outline their scripts. By laying a solid foundation for your script you will be on your way to being the best writer you can be. In Screenwriting 101 you will learn how to master the 3-act structure and character development that will separate your script from the thousands of others!

To get started, join us for Screenwriting 101, a fun course that will teach you everything you need to turn your story idea into a polished screenplay.  It doesn’t matter if you’ve never thought about writing a screenplay before or you’re a novice who may have dabbled a bit and are looking for the right process and methods to take your writing to the next level - it doesn’t matter. So long as you have a story to tell and are passionate about telling it, this workshop is for you.

Together we’ll explore the elements of a successful screenplay and we’ll do exercises that will provide you with the methods that you will be able to use time and time again for future projects.  Best of all, we’ll learn from one another in a supportive “no worries” atmosphere. The most important element of becoming a successful screenwriter is having feedback, and we don’t mean your spouse or mother! Real, honest, constructive feedback is vital to the development of an aspiring writer and with the structure of Screenwriting 101, you get just that.

Keeping in mind that most of us cannot alter space and time, we all have lives to live and it can be hard to devote an entire weekend to a workshop. With that in mind, and the all important aspect of feedback, we have structured Screenwriting 101 to provide you with the absolute most bang for your buck and hopefully make it fit into your life seamlessly.

The workshop will begin with an entire day together where we will cover everything from software and proper formatting to character arcs and plot points. In addition, we’ll spend the day answering all your questions about the screenwriting process and help each other develop your story ideas into solid foundations on which to begin your new screenplay. Over the coming weeks, you will work on completing small steps as you continue to map out your plot points and character development.

Our next meetings will be online using a virtual classroom which will allow a little more flexibility for everyone. You’ll share what you have written and we’ll all come up with ways to make your screenplays stronger. Finally, we’ll reconvene for one last day of final readings and notes and a discussion on the business and reality of being an aspiring screenwriter. The course will consist of two Saturday sessions, roughly 8 weeks apart, and three to four 1 hr. online sessions in between.

The goal of the workshop will be for you to leave the course with the first act of your screenplay in good shape, and have the outline--and the knowledge!--you’ll need to write the rest. Just remember, every single movie you’ve ever seen began with an idea...and a writer. We hope to see you soon. Space limited to 8 participants. Only a couple spots left!
